I just bought a Bosh GMS 120 Professional detector today. I decided to buy one and test it myself aware of the poor feedback about the DMF 10 and despite being unable to find any real reviews. I bought it from Toolstation which was slightly more expensive than I could buy it online for easy of return. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that this looks likely. I own many Bosch Professional power tools but only a DIY user with moderate experience and the GMS 120 is the first to disappoint.
I thought that Bosch may have ironed out all the problems with the DMF 10 in the GMS 120. This does not seem the case. I first test it in the garage where there was a surface mounted pipe, live cables in trunking and egatube conduit. For these the GMS 120 performed perfectly exactly how I expected but of course its serves no practical use. I tested for studs in a partition wall and the GMS 120 kept detecting live voltage in drywall mode across almost the entire length of the wall. In contrast I used the usual detector (a Draper 501D) I normal use and I was accurately able to mark the positions of the studs in the wall which were as expected around 60cm apart.
What I'm most concerned about with the GMS 120 is the voltage detection in both drywall mode and power cable mode. I tested on several walls - the results were sporadic. If I placed my hand above the detector it could turn from red to green and at other times it led to more accurate results. Again the Draper 501D performed reliably and accurately every time. One of the walls I tested the GMS 120 with was with this:
topic34838.html
I knew the exact path of the cable from the switched fused connection unit to the outlet plate which supplies the TV. (This was done by an electrician - I am aware that an angled chase is not correct practice). One attempt it correctly identified where the live cable was working across then down the wall. But another time it would turn red all the time and another time it was green at all times. Calibration didn't help.
I don't think I have a faulty unit. I bought it because it is advertised as being simple and easy to use. The manual is even only 9 pages long. So I feel that Ultimatehandyman's views on the DMF 10 are applicable to the GMS 120. Its unreliable, imprecise and potentially dangerous - it should be removed from the market.
I'm going to contact Bosch and see what they have to say but it looks like its going to be returned shortly.
